An abstract thriller - Guarantees fine performances and thrills; but may not appeal in entirety

Rating:

Key plot: Prof. Venkat (Amitabh Bachchan), a math genius, is encouraged to test his theory in the real world by professor Shantanu (Madhavan) with the help of a few students Aparna (Shraddha Kapoor), Bikram (Dhruv Ganesh), Sid (Siddharth Kher) and Abbas (Vaibhav Talwar). Although Venkat has no interest in the money that could come from practicing his equation to crack teen patti, (a poker game) he eventually succumbs to Shantanu's charismatic persuasion. They explore the gambling dens of Mumbai, and become so money minded that they are unable to control the situation. Caught in the web of their habit, the gang has no option but to keep it on. What follows is a series of edge-of-your-seat escapades and several dangerous situations.

Thumbs Up: Fresh concept, slick and stylish presentation, striking cinematography and art direction, Bachchan’s realistic portrayal, confident debut by four newcomers.

Thumbs Down: The concept doesn’t appeal to the masses, writing is erratic and narrative complicated. Second-half of the film loses track. The film mainly appeals to a niche intellects and not the ones looking for pure Bollywood style entertainment.

Performances: No words can describe Amitabh and Sir Ben Kingsley’s screen presence. The two are awesome and essay their characters with effortless ease. Madhavan impresses with his restraint act with negative shades. Raima Sen as his ladylove has no scope. The four debutants don’t disappoint. Other actors, including Ajay Devgan, Shakti Kapoor (debutant Shraddha Kapoor’s father) and Jackie Shroff in cameos, are not much to talk about.

Quick Take: Set in India and England, and starring two of the greatest living acting legends - Amitabh Bachchan and Academy Awards Winner Ben Kingsley (of Gandhi fame) - Teen Patti is a shady thriller about greed, deception and giant feats of imagination and bears an uncanny resemblance to the Hollywood film ‘21’. The message of the film is clear, greed can’t be satisfied. How much we wished, as the trailers conveyed, more power play between Ben Kingsley and Big B.

Verdict: Go for this thriller if you want to watch a ‘hatke’ film, and should we say abstract? The film guarantees some superfine performances and thrilling moments; but may not appeal in entirety. Are you game?
